Delhi air pollution: AQI in ‘very poor’ category, likely to worsen in next two days

The air pollution level in Delhi remains in the ‘very poor’ category.

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘very poor’ category with an overall AQI of 360 on Thursday. The AQI forecasting agency, which comes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, said the air quality in the national capital and its neighboring cities is likely to deteriorate over the next two days.

Earlier on Wednesday, the overall air quality was improved from ‘severe’ to ‘very poor’ as the wind direction was favorable for transport of straw-related pollutants.

Delhi recorded ‘severe’ air quality for three consecutive days till Sunday, as emissions from crackers accumulated on Diwali and crop residue burning amid adverse meteorological conditions – low temperature, wind speed and height of the mix.

Although the highest this season’s 5,450 farm fires were recorded in neighboring states on Sunday, their share in Delhi’s air pollution fell from 48 per cent a day earlier, the highest in three years, due to a fall on Monday. became 30 percent. Transport-level wind speeds, according to air quality forecasting agency SAFAR.

AQI between zero and 50 is ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 and 500 ‘very poor’ considered serious.

Last year, the share of stubble burning in Delhi’s pollution reached 42 per cent on November 5. In 2019, crop residue burning accounted for 44 per cent of Delhi’s PM2.5 pollution as on November 1.
