Robin Uthappa talks about Shubman Gill’s recent exploits with the bat and says he can achieve greater heights in future.

Former India opener Robin Uthappa has heaped praise on young batting sensation Shubman Gill and said that he has the potential to become the next biggie in Indian cricket like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. The 22-year-old has been in scintillating form in recent times as he has scored hundreds across formats this season, while his recent IPL hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad is icing on the cake. The talented batsman has almost cemented his place in all three formats of Indian cricket with his consistent performances.

Uthappa, who won the Orange Cap in IPL 2014, heaped praise on Shubman for his recent exploits with the bat and said he can achieve great heights in future.

“I definitely see the potential in him to become as big as Virat Kohli or Sachin Tendulkar. I definitely think he’s got the stuff. He is an exceptional player who is in exceptional form and is playing some exceptional cricket at the moment,” said JioCinema IPL expert Robin Uthappa.

The veteran opener also talked about Yashasvi Jaiswal and said that he and Gill are the next big things in Indian cricket.

“I personally feel and believe that Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the two next big things in Indian cricket.”

The southpaw has scored the fastest half-century in IPL history this season – off 13 balls against KKR and has been scoring consistently well for the Rajasthan Royals.

Meanwhile, Uthappa suggested that India will not include any breakout IPL star in the 2023 ODI World Cup squad and only then give them a chance for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

“From my experience with the Indian team, I think they will continue with experienced players as it is not wise to make major changes so close to the World Cup. And I think form is temporary. Having said that, I think we can see big changes after the World Cup. Yes, there are some injury concerns that need to be addressed. We are already missing Bumrah and I hope he is fit before the World Cup. Then you have KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant and these are areas of concern I think. I am hopeful that we will field a fit team and give ourselves the best possible chance of winning the World Cup,” he said.
