‘Defending Mistake Leads to More Errors’: ‘Enjoy Rape’ Comment in Doc Over, Explains Congress MLA in Karnataka Assembly

Amid backlash over his “enjoy rape” remark, former Karnataka president and senior Congress MLA KR Ramesh Kumar on Friday apologized for his remarks in the state assembly. He said he has no ego and will admit his mistake without trying to defend his statement. “Explanation leads to more mistakes”.

Kumar claimed that he had just shared a proverb, and that he did not intend to insult women or minimize the crime. “If a woman is feeling humiliated. I will apologize unconditionally, if and but not.”

Kumar had said in the Karnataka Assembly a day earlier that “when rape is unavoidable, lie down and enjoy.” Several MLAs were eager to speak during a discussion on the damages related to rains and floods highlighting the plight of the people in their constituencies.

Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri was short of time and wanted to end the discussion by 6 pm, while the MLA was insisting on extending the time. “I’m in a position where I have to enjoy and say ‘yes, yes.’ That’s all. That’s what I think. I should stop controlling the situation and proceed in a systematic way, I should all I should ask you to continue my talk,” Kageri said with a laugh.

He explained that his only complaint is that home business is not happening. A former minister, Ramesh Kumar, intervened and said, “Look, there is a saying – when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That’s exactly the situation you are in”.

Kageri also tried to clear his laughter on Friday. “I said let’s enjoy the situation and what Ramesh Kumar said led to the debate,” he said, requesting the House to end the controversy.

“What respect we have for women, we want to uphold and are committed to working for it. Let’s not escalate it. End of discussion,” the Speaker ruled.
