Dedicated window for IPL? Jay Shah gave a big update on the number of matches

The media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) touch a massive valuation of Rs. 48,390 crore for 2023 to 2027 making the league one of the richest sports leagues in the world. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has given a major update on a dedicated and bigger window for the cash-rich league. Shah revealed that the BCCI is in talks with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to extend the duration of the league.

In an interview with Cricbuzz, Shah explained, “We are in talks with our fellow member boards and the ICC about a bigger dedicated window for the IPL. IPL is a marquee event on the annual cricket calendar, and it is now only is behind. NFL. The quality of cricket that you see in IPL is world class with senior international stars coming and playing with their Indian counterparts.”

According to indications, the number will increase to 410 with a gradual increase after every two editions. It is learned that the Indian cricket board will schedule 74 games in the first two years of the cycle – 2023 and 2024 – followed by 84 matches over the next few seasons. It could go up to 94 in the fifth and final season of the cycle, although the BCCI has kept the option of 84 matches open.

“Not just cricketers but some legends of the game in the IPL are now turning to coaches. It is a wonderful platform and benefits everyone as the experience that one gets here is invaluable. As we go forward, more sports will be available. The numbers will increase,” he added.

So far, the league has been divided into two virtual groups of five teams, with each side playing twice against the four others in their group, once against four from the other group and twice against the remaining team. If playoff clashes are included, the number increases to 74. In the case of 84, the formula can play twice against each side in its own group, twice against two of the other group and once against the remaining three.
