Mysuru: The number of HIV positive cases in the country has come down Mysore Districts compared to previous years
This year, 389 tested positive till October, while 916 and 521 were tested in 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively.
The district has tested 91,953 people in all its 25 Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers (ICTCs), which include all seven taluks, in 2021.
In the same period 2020-21, district health officials tested 45,636 pregnant women and detected 21 pregnant HIV-positive cases with a prevalence rate of 0.04 per cent.
The district conducted tests on 68,819 people across all its ICTCs till the end of this October and detected 389 cases with a prevalence rate of 0.56 per cent this year. If patients infected with AIDS are also included, then the total number increases to 521.
As against 29,037 pregnant women tested, 11 women were tested positive for HIV/AIDS in the district till the end of this October, with a prevalence rate of 0.03 per cent.
The district recorded 1,030 in 2017-18, 1,022 in 2018-19, 916 in 2019-20, 521 in 2020-21 and 389 in 2021-22 (till October).
As per taluk-wise HIV infected report in 2020-21, Mysuru has reported 196, Hunsur 47, Periyapatna 17, KR Nagar 31, Nanjangud 49, HD Kote 26, T. Narsipur 44 and 111 cases from other districts.
According to the District AIDS Control Society report, 45 children (born to their mothers) have been identified as infected with HIV in the district after testing 736 children from 2010 to October 2021.
Apart from this, 23,349 HIV/AIDS have been treated so far in the Antiretroviral Treatment Centers of KR Hospital. Asha Grocery |, and JSS Hospital in the district from May 2004 till date, the sources said. District officials attribute the decline to government-run awareness programs and protective measures.
Talking to TOI, District Health Officer, Dr KH Prasad said that the District AIDS Control Unit has initiated several measures to reduce the cases by spreading awareness by performing street plays with trained artistes. Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society ,KSAPSSeminars, workshops, wall posters about the importance of using condoms and other safe sex measures.
Measures such as easing the availability of condoms at all public places also contributed greatly to the decline in cases in the district.
He said that since the prevalence rate in the district is now 0.56 per cent, it will be reduced to half in the coming years with the joint efforts of both the District Health Department and the District AIDS Control Society.
