Decision on Karnataka CM possible by Monday, know Yeddyurappa’s reaction on Dalit successor

Bangalore: Speculations are rife that Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa will have to resign from his post on Monday (July 26) citing health problems. According to sources, the Center can take a decision on the next CM of Karnataka by today or tomorrow evening.

Amidst the rumours, Yediyurappa made a brief statement about the Dalit heir in the state. The 78-year-old CM had earlier said that he was ready to step down as the chief minister due to health issues. He said he was waiting for the suggestions of the high command and indicated that a decision on the next CM would be taken by today or tomorrow evening. The Karnataka chief minister, who has a large support base from the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community and the All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha, said, “I am not worried if the high command appoints a Dalit chief minister.”

The Center will have to examine at least eight MLAs and ministers to finalize the next Karnataka chief minister. But, the possible outgoing CM Yediyurappa has also kept options open while hinting about a successor.

According to a report in TOI, the high command has shortlisted eight people and said that a leader of the Lingayat community is going to take the responsibility of the state. The MLAs and ministers being considered are: “Dharwad West MLA Arvind Bellad, Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, Karnataka Mines and Geology Minister Murgesh R Nirani, Basavaraj Bommai, Pralhad Joshi, BL Santosh, CN Ashwath Narayan, Laxman Savadi, Govind Karjol, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri and CT Ravi,”

In 2018 election, BJP being the single largest party fell short of majority to form the government and only then Congress and JDS coalition government came to power. But, within a year, there was a rift in the coalition which led to the fall of the government as 13 Congress MLAs and three JDS MLAs defected. Exactly two years ago on July 26, 2019, BS Yediyurappa took oath as the Chief Minister after the collapse of the coalition government in Karnataka.
