Debit Card Gone, Cop Dials Toll-free Number, Loses 2l | Noida News – Times of India

NOIDA: A head constable with the Noida police was allegedly cheated of Rs 2 lakh after he called on the “toll-free number” of a bank, obtained through a Google search, to report the loss of his debit card.
An FIR has been lodged under the IT Act, police said on Saturday.
In his police complaint, Devesh Kumar Upadhyaya resident of Sector 24, claimed he lost his debit card while accompanying his sick father to a hospital on February 15. “Wasting no time, I called on the bank’s ‘toll-free number’ that I found online in order to get my card blocked.”
After a while on the same day, the cop received a call from an unknown number. “Identifying himself as a bank official, the caller assured me that he would block the card and asked me for some personal details. The caller then made me download a mobile application on my phone,” he said.
As soon as Upadhyay downloaded the application, the caller took remote access to his phone and emptied his bank account.
“Around Rs 2 lakh was siphoned off from my account in two transactions. When I sought details about the transactions, the caller disconnected the call.”
On his complaint, an FIR under Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act was registered at the Sector 24 police station.
“A probe is on and a team is working to track down the accused. At the same time, we urge people not to fall prey to any such scam,” said Gyan SinghSHO of Sector 24 police station.
