GURUGRAM: Three days after four construction workers fell to death at a housing site in Sector 77, police on Friday morning arrested three people, including the project manager, only to release them a couple of hours later on bail. During a preliminary probe, police found negligence on part of the three who were present at the site at the time of the accident and that the workers were not provided with adequate safety equipment.
The accident occurred inside the compound of Emaar Palm Hills — where a 25-storey tower is being built — around 4.30pm on Tuesday. The four workers standing on a platform to fix a tower crane slipped and fell 17 floors to their death. A fifth worker survived the fall and is fighting for his life at a private hospital.
Following the accident, an FIR was filed under IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 304A (death in accident), 336 (endangering life), 337 (negligent act to endanger life) at Kherki Daula police station against six people — project manager Viyum Kesh, tower in-charge Suresh Katyal, foreman Santosh Kumar Sahu, safety engineer Anil Kumar, site engineer Avinash Kumar, and contractor Manjush Kumar.
“Three of the accused — Viyum, Suresh and Santosh — were issued notices to join the investigation. We arrested them this morning, recorded their statements and released them on bail,” said inspector Rajender Kumar, SHO of Kherki Daula police station. “Initial investigation has revealed negligence and lack of safety equipment led to the fatal accident.”
Police said the three others named in the FIR — the safety engineer, the site engineer and the contractor — have yet to join the investigation. “We have already urged the labour department and DTCP to submit their reports on the accident,” the SHO said.
Deputy commissioner of Gurgaon Nishant Yadav has also formed a committee to probe the lapses in safety arrangements for workers and negligence that led to the fatal accident.
Meanwhile TOI has learnt that the labour department is trying to complete the paperwork to ensure early payment of compensation to the family members of the deceased.
