Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Tuesday wrote to Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu seeking reconstitution of the parliamentary panel set up to deliberate on the Child Marriage Amendment Bill, 2021.

In the letter, the DCW chief expressed concern over the fact that only one woman MP was included in the 31-member parliamentary standing committee and sought its reconstitution with more than half the women MPs.

Maliwal demanded that the panel constituted to consider the bill, which aims to raise the age of marriage of girls from 18 to 21 years, should be headed by a woman as the matter is integral to the future of crores of women.

“It is sad that the present committee has only one woman out of 30 men! This is a sensitive matter and will affect the lives of crores of women. Therefore, it should be decided through an extensive and consultative process led by women.” “

Drawing attention to the failure of the agencies to enforce the existing laws against child marriage, Maliwal in the letter also stressed for comprehensive consultation and evaluation in the matter. He also drew attention to the systematic failure of the agencies to enforce the existing laws against child marriage.

“The issue of raising the legal marriageable age of women in India is controversial and requires extensive evaluation and deliberation, supported by extensive research on the implementation of the existing provisions of the law as well as the impact of the proposed amendments,” the DCW lead said in the letter. .
