Former Australian opening batter David Warner will captain Sydney Thunder in the upcoming 2024-25 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). Sydney Thunder took to X on Wednesday to confirm Warner’s appointment as the new captain. Warner was banned from leadership for his role in the ball tampering incident that took place during the Australia tour of South Africa in March 2018.

His life-time ban was lifted by Cricket Australia a couple of weeks ago, and the retired Australian batter is now all set to lead the Sydney-based team.

Speaking on his return to lead the club, Warner said: “Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me. I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that ‘C’ next to my name feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through.”

Reflecting on previous captains, the 38-year-old batter acknowledged the impact of former leaders on the team: “I want to compliment the way Greeny (Chris Green) led from the front. He’s an exceptional talent with fantastic leadership qualities. Jason Sangha, too, before his injury. I gained great insight from both, and I know they’re guys I can lean on this season.”

With a squad that blends fresh talent and seasoned players, Warner is excited to take on the mentorship role.

“One of the most exciting parts of this role is the chance to give back to the younger players, to pass on some of the knowledge I’ve gathered over the years. I want to help them grow so that one day, one of these young guns can step up and lead the team when I’m done.”

“We have an incredible group of young players like Ollie Davies, Jason Sangha, and Sam Konstas. They’re fearless and have so much potential. My goal is to guide them, help them learn the game, and ultimately give them the tools to thrive both in the BBL and beyond,” he added.

Thunder will open its campaign in BBL 2024-25 on December 17 in Canberra when they take on the Adelaide Strikers.
