Bhubaneswar: Arrested by special squad of Commissionerate Police on Monday Hemant Das (59), a type of thief, who has allegedly carried out at least 500 burglaries across the country since 1986 and has so far in his life stole expensive household items as well as cash worth about Rs 5 crore. Yet, he claims himself to be poor with a bank balance of only Rs 1,400.

“We have found around 100 theft cases against him in Bhubaneswar alone so far. He had been arrested earlier also. He was also arrested in Mumbai and Chennai in the past,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Uma Shankar Dash said.
The accused broke into the call girl and liquor. “During interrogation he told us that he has already looted around Rs 5 crore in his life. But we were stunned to find only Rs 1400 in his bank account. He spent all the money to maintain a lavish life,” the DCP said.
The infamous thief, whose wife and two children allegedly disowned him because of his criminal activities, was a frequent air passenger. After breaking into homes and commercial establishments, he boarded flights to different cities and stayed in star hotels, police said. He used to spend between Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000 a day in hotels.
Das told the police that he was a brilliant student during his college days. He had reportedly secured 89 per cent in plus-II arts in the prestigious BJB College Here. Dash was arrested in 1986 in connection with student unrest on the college campus. In jail, he came in contact with some thieves and started walking on the wrong path.
“We will take him on remand for questioning and to know whether he was involved in other crimes in Bhubaneswar and other places in the state,” the DCP said.
