Guwahati: Alarming spike in Covid cases seen Assam The number of daily cases on Tuesday approached the 3,000-mark – up from Monday’s 2,198 cases to 2,837.
The positivity rate has also increased by over 1% from the previous day’s 4.49% to 5.69%. A total of 49,840 tests were conducted on Tuesday, which was about 1,000 more than on Monday.
A senior health department official reported two Covid deaths across the state in the last 24 hours, which, according to him, indicates a low risk to life in the third wave. However, the rapid spread in Guwahati has been a matter of greatest concern. Around 8,600 tests were conducted in Kamrup (Metro) on Tuesday, which is more than any other district in the state.
“The positive rate may fluctuate but with the increase in testing the total cases are increasing,” he said. With a steady increase in positive cases, the number of active COVID cases in the state has gone up to 9,253 till Tuesday evening. The figure was 6,867 on the previous day.
On Tuesday, the maximum number of 870 cases were detected in Kamrup (Metro) district, under which comes Guwahati city, followed by Jorhat (215 cases) and Cachar (189 cases). Dibrugarh had 170 cases.
“All the three districts from where maximum number of cases have been detected are important transit routes or nerve centers of three different parts of the state. Large footfalls will definitely aggravate the situation,” said the official. In Guwahati, the positive rate was over 10% on Tuesday.
“Wherever we are going for testing, new cases are being detected. In government offices, market places, residential areas, the infection has spread everywhere,” Ganesh Saikia, joint director of health services, Kamrup (Metro), told TOI on Tuesday.
A total of 4,189 positive cases have been reported in Kamrup (Metro) in the last 10 days. This is several times more than Kamrup (rural) district which ranks second in the case count of 693 in the last 10 days.
