Asani, the first cyclonic storm of 2022, is likely to make landfall along the Andaman and Nicobar coasts by March 21. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that a low pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by March 21.

Issuing the alert, the weather agency further said that the low pressure area, which formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, will move east-northeastwards till the morning of March 19 and then move towards Andaman and Andhra Pradesh by March 20. An official statement said that as the islands gear up for the oncoming cyclone, the administration in the archipelago is also making necessary arrangements to deal with incidents, which include evacuating people from low-lying areas.
