India Meteorological Department scientist RK Janmani on Sunday predicted that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to experience heavy rain and strong winds today, as part of the formation of Cyclone Asani. Janmani said, “As of now it is a depression which will intensify into a deep depression by Monday morning and intensify further into a cyclonic storm by Monday evening. If it emerges into a cyclonic storm, it will be known as Cyclone Asani. Will go.”

However, IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said on Sunday that the cyclone would not make landfall in the Andaman Islands. The weather system is very likely to intensify into a deep depression and a cyclonic storm later today.

“As per our forecast, the weather system will move northwards towards Andaman Islands as well as Myanmar and adjoining south Bangladesh coast,” Mohapatra said.

Meanwhile, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been deployed and are ready at various places with all necessary equipment to conduct search and rescue operations.

Indian Coast Guard ships are evacuating fishermen out to sea and issuing weather warnings on Sunday afternoon ahead of the upcoming Cyclone Asani.
