Cyclist on Kerala-London 30,000-km ride reaches Mangaluru | Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: Fayis Ashraf Ali, who is on a mission to fulfill his dream of a transcontinental bicycle trip, was on Monday spotted in Kundapur – about 700 and odd kilometres far from Thiruvananthapuram where he started his journey on August 15.
Ali’s bicycle trip is part of his 30,000-km long Kerala to London ride which he aims to cover in 450 days.
The 34-year-old was welcomed in Mangaluru on Sunday by oral surgeon Dr Ramaraj P N.
Ali’s bicycle expedition was flagged off by V Sivankutty, Kerala general education and labour minister.
Through the ride, he aims to raise awareness about fitness and healthcare.
Campaigning for the ‘End Polio Now’ programme of rotary mission, promoting conflict resolution and peace building, educating public on the grand literary heritage of Malayalam language and promoting ‘go green’ and anti-drug campaigns in college campuses are some of his other objectives of during the trip.
The expedition was also co-launched in Kochi by Jennifer E Johnson, president of Rotary International. Ali is is a Rotarian from Calicut Sunrise club.
“I left my job as a networking engineer in 2016 to take care of my father Ashraf, who had a cardiac ailment. That was when I developed an interest in cycling. I lost my father in 2018. I believe that cycling can in maintaining cardiac health,” said ali speaking to TOI.
He hopes to cover 30,000 km across 35 countries before he reaching his final destination.
He has planned to hold discussions with student groups en route to the United Kingdom.
During this bicycle ride half way around the world, Ali hopes to get in touch with various voluntary organisations, socio-cultural organisations, and youth groups.
The cyclist who hails from Thalakkulathur in Kozhikode district in Kerala, has also planned to cover 500 destinations, 150 schools, and 25 universities during the ride.
“In the first leg of the journey, I will ride till Mumbai and then fly to Muscat. From there I will continue the bicycle ride. I will be avoiding China and Pakistan. I cover an average distance of 90 to 100 km daily,” he added.
It was, during a similar trip to Singapore with his friend Ajith in 2019, when Ali decided to ride to London from Kerala.
Ali’s ride is an US-made Surly Disk Trucker which is sponsored by a UAE-based travel and luggage accessories company ParaJohn.
Emirates First, a Dubai-based company and Rotary International are supporting the trip in collaboration with Malayalam Mission, Norka Roots, Kerala Tourism, and Kerala Heart Foundation.
Ali is married to Dr Asmin Fayis and the they have two boys – Fahzin Omar and Izin Nahel.
