After using wireless skimmers to steal card details, this tribe is now using spoofing techniques to create proxy Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. This is proving to be a task for the police, who often find themselves chasing wild goose with fake IP addresses.
According to cybercrime officials, several cases of credit card frauds were regularly being reported to the cyber crime police in the capital region.
“Frauds mostly happen in crowded places like petrol pumps, restaurants and shopping malls and during online usage of cards. Card details have been stolen. They are using skimmers to copy the card data when the card is handed over to them,” said an official of Hyderabad Cyber Crime Cell, adding that the data was used for online shopping and online purchase of tickets or coupons. In some cases, suspects used credit card details to purchase domestic air tickets using spoofing techniques so that IP addresses could not be easily traced. Spoofing, when the police tried to track down an IP address, would show the address as being in another country, even though the fraudster would be here a lot. Mostly, the Aadhar card and other identity proofs used will also be fake.
Cybercrime officials have advised extreme caution while using credit cards in public places.
