Kumar had clarified that under the new system, students of state boards would not suffer.

Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is a step in the right direction and any remaining challenges in the exam will be resolved at the earliest, Union education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Friday. His remarks came on the first day of the first edition of CUET, the second biggest entrance exam in India, amid complaints of last-minute change of exam centres, long travel for students and lengthy question paper.

“CUET is a right step towards quality and standardization. Any remaining challenge in CUET will be resolved at the earliest,” Pradhan said. Many candidates missed the paper due to the change in exam centres, even as the National Testing Agency (NTA) said that they will be given one more chance to appear in the next stage, which will be held in August. University Grants Commission (UGC) chief Jagdish Kumar had announced in March that CUET scores, not Class 12 marks, would be mandatory for admission to 45 central universities, which may decide their minimum eligibility criteria.

Kumar had clarified that there would be no harm to the students of state boards under the new system and the examination would not promote coaching culture. A total of 44 Central Universities, 12 State Universities, 11 Deemed Universities and 19 Private Universities have applied to participate in the first edition of CUET-UG for admission in the academic session 2022-23.
