Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma now owns the record for most ducks in the history of IPL. Rohit achieved the unwanted milestone during his 236th match of IPL career as Mumbai beat Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Saturday afternoon.
Meeting for the second time in IPL 2023, it was CSK skipper MS Dhoni who won the toss and opted to bowl first against the five-time champions, whom they defeated at the Wankhede Stadium earlier this season.
It was the 16th time on Saturday that Rohit got out without troubling the scorers, caught by Ravindra Jadeja off Deepak Chahar.
The 36-year-old went for the lap shot but instead the ball hit him on the shoulder of his bat and skied towards the gully area, kissing the glove.
It was also a second consecutive duck for Rohit, who was dismissed for a duck by Punjab Kings’ Rishi Dhawan as MI chased down 215 for a six-wicket win in Mohali.
In 10 innings this season, Rohit has been able to score only 184 runs at a strike rate of 126.89. His average is 18.39.
He has crossed the fifty mark once, scoring 65 against Delhi Capitals last month.
Rohit had tied the tally with Dinesh Karthik, Sunil Narine and Mandeep Singh (15 ducks each) during the PBKS game.
MI made two changes for the CSK clash bringing in Tristan Stubbs and giving debut to Raghav Goel. Tilak Verma is ruled out due to injury while Kumar Karthikeya has been kept on the bench.
He said, ‘It has become difficult to fit the right players and that is the nature of the tournament. We know the strengths of the players and know where they can fit in. We have selected the team based on the conditions.
Ahead of Saturday’s clash with CSK, MI chased down 200-plus totals in consecutive games.
