“The mob was furious over the death of one Govind Manjhi, who was arrested sometime back for indulging in the liquor business. He has been sent to judicial custody and kept in a jail adjoining Aurangabad district, they said. Notably, the sale and consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited in Bihar, where the Nitish Kumar government brought in a strict prohibition law six years ago.

“Manjhi died in jail on Friday. As soon as the news reached here, the people of his village sat on a dharna on the highway alleging physical torture. When a police team tried to convince them, they resorted to violence”, Pandey said. The SDPO said the constable, Kanti Devi, “was hit by a vehicle while she was engaged in the operation and went to the hospital. He died while being taken. a hospital”.

“The agitators pelted heavy stones and fired some shots with unlicensed firearms. Several police personnel have suffered serious injuries. We have arrested five people in this connection. Heavy police force is deployed to keep the situation under control.”
