Former Manchester United player Mikel Silvestre has backed Cristiano Ronaldo after blaming the Portuguese star forward for his club’s stellar performance so far this season. Manchester United are currently in seventh place on the points table and are almost out of the title race. The Red Devils signed some big names ahead of the ongoing season – Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Rafael Varane, but United have so far not lived up to expectations as a unit.

The Premier League giants sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer midway last year and appointed Ralph Ragnaric as interim manager for the rest of the season. The club’s fortunes did not change with the arrival of a German manager as they continued to struggle in the league.

Upon his return to the club, Ronaldo made some match-deciding appearances for the club. He has scored 14 goals and provided two assists in 19 appearances for United since his return. However, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been criticized by many for his off-ball rate and attitude on the pitch. He looked disappointed with his teammates for their poor performance in recent matches.

Manchester United legend Sylvester heaped praise on the Portugal captain and said he did not come to Old Trafford to rest.

“This comment about him (Cristiano Ronaldo) being a problem is complete nonsense. Look at the ratio of goals scored to opportunities scored since the start of the season. He wants to win trophies. He didn’t come to United to rest before retirement – it’s a bigger challenge than any he’s faced before. Everything he has done has been positive,” Silvestre told The Mirror.

On Monday, Manchester United will host Wolverhampton and since they are still unbeaten in four Premier League matches Ralph Rangnick was appointed as manager until the end of the season to turn the team’s fortunes around. Despite three wins and one draw, the performance so far has been far from convincing. United are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal but have two games in hand. Wolves are two places below United in ninth but with six fewer points.
