Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the Criminal Procedure (Identity) Bill will ensure that police and investigators stay two steps ahead of criminals. Replying to the discussion on the bill in Lok Sabha, he said that the members of the opposition who are concerned about human rights should also show concern over the human rights of those targeted by criminals.

He said that this bill will act as a protector of human rights of crores of law-abiding citizens. Referring to the concerns of some opposition members over the misuse of data collected under the proposed law, Shah said the world is using the database and “we have to use it too”, moving with the times.

He said the database is being used for over two-and-a-half years to solve crimes including automobile thefts. Shah said the data will be stored in a protected hardware and those who “send samples (for matching) will be sent the result and the data will not be shared”.

He said the bill has been brought to ensure that police and investigators stay two steps ahead of criminals. He said that there should be no apprehension.

He said that the next generation of crimes cannot be tackled with old techniques. “We have to try to take the criminal justice system to the next era,” Shah said.

Stating that the BJP was not involved in vote bank politics, he said the Prevention of Terrorism Act was a law in the national interest and was repealed for “appeasement”.
