New Delhi: A day before booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine were made available to the adult population in India, prices of Covishield and Covaxin in private hospitals were cut by more than half on Saturday.
It has been decided that the cost of both the vaccines will now be Rs 225. Before the rate revision, Covishield was available for Rs 600 while Covaxin was priced at Rs 1,200.
This was announced by Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla and Bharat Biotech cofounder Suchitra Ella on Twitter handle.
Adar Poonawalla wrote, “We are happy to announce that after discussions with the Central Government, SII has decided to revise the price of COVISHIELD Vaccine for private hospitals from Rs 600 to Rs 225 per dose. We once again appreciate the Centre’s decision to give a precautionary dose to all 18+ people.

According to a report in news agency ANI, Ella said, “We have decided to revise the price of Covaxin for private hospitals from Rs 1200 to Rs 225 per dose.”

Notably, India has decided to make available a COVID-19 booster dose to all adults from Sunday, April 10.
“Administration of the precautionary dose to the 18+ population through private immunization centers will begin from April 10 (Sunday), 2022. All those who are above 18 years of age and have completed 9 months after the administration of the second dose , will be eligible for the precautionary dosage,” the health ministry said in a statement on Friday.
Meanwhile, according to health ministry data, around 96 per cent of all 15+ age groups in the country have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while about 83 per cent of this population has received both doses. .
More than 2.4 crore precautionary doses have also been given to healthcare workers, frontline workers and 60+ population groups.
