Covishield-Covaxin mixture provides better shielding, says ICMR study India News – Times of India

Pune/New Delhi: Combination of Covishield and Covaxin may not only be safe, but provide better immune protection and adverse effects were not isolated as in the same vaccine regimen, ICMR said in Uttar Pradesh for a “severe” COVID-19 Shows analysis of the vaccine-mixture.
The study examined 18 individuals in UP who inadvertently received CovaShield as the first jab and Covaxin as the second. The researchers compared the safety and immunogenicity profiles of this group with those of two groups of individuals who received either Covishield or Covaxin.
The pre-print of the Indian Council of Medical Research study, published in MedRxiv, states, “The findings suggest that the combination of an adenovirus vector platform-based vaccine with an inactivated whole virus vaccine followed by vaccination was not only safer, but also improved immunogenicity.” was also received.” it is said.
Blood samples from 18 individuals accidentally given Covashield and then Covaxin jabs in April-May were analyzed at various stages from 60 to 70 days after vaccination.
The study’s principal investigator, senior ICMR scientist Rajni Kant, said, “Combination of the first and second doses of Covishield and Covaxin provoked a better immune response than the two doses of Covishield or Covaxin.” This is the first report of a mixed vaccination that has demonstrated protection and a significantly improved immune response.
The findings are important because experts have asked whether Covishield and Covaxin supplements can be combined to address the supply shortfall. Currently, intentional mixing of the two vaccines is not advised. But to conclusively prove these findings, the ICMR researchers said a multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) would be needed as the current sample size was small.
Findings showed immunogenicity profiles in those who received both vaccines were superior to those with alpha, beta and delta variants, with IgG antibody and neutralizing antibody response being significantly higher than in homozygous groups. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the effects of heterogeneous prime-boost vaccination with an adenovirus vectored vaccine followed by an inactivated whole virus vaccine,” the researchers said.
