Covid ‘tsunami’ will lead to collapse of health systems: WHO

New Delhi: The World Health Organization has warned that a tsunami of coronavirus cases, both Omicron and Delta, will ‘push health systems to the brink of collapse.’

“I am very worried that omicron, being more transmissible, circulating along the delta is causing a tsunami of cases. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference it would continue to put enormous pressure on exhausted health workers and health systems.

The WHO said that the newer variants of Kovid-19, Delta and Omicron, are the main reasons behind the increase in hospitalizations and deaths.

“This is and will continue to put immense pressure on exhausted healthcare workers, and health systems on the verge of collapse.”

The WHO Director-General also said that apart from the increase in new COVID patients, a large number of health workers are falling ill with the coronavirus, which is also one of the reasons for the pressure on health systems.

“Unrelated people are many times more at risk of dying from either type,” he said.
