COVID Tally: 7,974 fresh Covid cases, 343 deaths reported in India in last 24 hours

The death toll stands at 4,76,478. The daily positivity rate has been less than 2 per cent for the last 73 days. A total of 66.02 crore Kovid-19 tests have been done so far.

As on December 16, 2021, 1,41,80,42,210 vaccine doses have been provided to the States and Union Territories. Under the nationwide vaccination campaign, 135.25 crore vaccine doses have been given so far.

According to media reports, the total number of omicron cases in India is 73. In India, the omicron variant has been detected in West Bengal, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. West Bengal reported its first Omicron case on Wednesday, 15 December. Tamil Nadu reported its first Omicron case on Wednesday evening. Maharashtra and Kerala reported four new omicron cases each on Wednesday. The total number of omicron cases in Maharashtra has risen to 32.

Additional Chief Secretary Health Dr Pradeep Vyas said on Wednesday, “The Omicron version of Kovid-19 is likely to see a rise in cases across Maharashtra in January next year.”

A new study has found that COVID-19 vaccines, and booster shots in particular, may offer protection against serious consequences from infection with the Omron variant. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that COVID vaccines against Omicron may be less effective.

The center aims to fully vaccinate 65 percent of India’s adult population by the end of December, and will review its COVID vaccination plan thereafter, according to the report. The center will also review the permission for booster doses and vaccinations for children.
