COVID scare in England – Sri Lanka series match referee as test positive

ICC match referee Phil Whitice, who was on duty during the recently concluded England-Sri Lanka T20I series, has tested positive for COVID-19. “Following a PCR test at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Friday 25 June, the England and Wales Cricket Board can confirm that ICC Match Referee Phil Whitneys has tested positive for COVID-19. Whitice, who officiated during the three-match Vitality IT20 series between England and Sri Lanka, is fine and has no symptoms.”

“He will now follow a 10-day self-isolation period from 25 June, in accordance with the UK government’s protocol on quarantine.

“Match officials and seven other members of the Anti-Corruption Unit teams were considered close contacts, with five members due to officiate at the first Royal London ODI at Emirates Riverside, Durham on Tuesday, 29 June. Affected people will have to self-isolate for 10 days till July 7.

Importantly, the board clarified that none of the members of the two teams were affected.

“Alternative arrangements will be made to ensure that Tuesday’s ODI goes ahead as planned,” the statement said.

The series has been a mismatch so far, with England thrashing Sri Lanka 3–0 in the T20I series. England, the winners of the World Cup 2019, start favorites in ODIs as well.
