This has led to a rapid increase in the number of dengue patients in hospitals in the last one month, while the number of Covid cases has remained stable. Almost all private hospitals have now made dengue and malaria testing mandatory for all patients admitted with fever along with RT-PCR for COVID.
Raja Dhar, Director of Pulmonology, CMRI Hospital, said that most of the dengue patients currently admitted in hospitals have mild to moderate symptoms of the disease and would not have taken admission if they did not suspect a Covid infection.
“Similar symptoms are prompting many people, especially the elderly and comorbid, to be hospitalized without waiting for test results even after thorough vaccination,” Dhar said.
AMRI hospitals now have around 50 dengue patients and 55 Covid patients admitted to its three units.
AMRI CEO Rupak Barua said, “We have made dengue and malaria testing mandatory for all fever patients.”
