COVID Effect: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in J&K shuts down after 13 students test positive

everyone: Thirteen students of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Jammu and Kashmir’s Katra have tested COVID-19 positive, prompting the district management to order closure of the university campus.

Reasi District Magistrate Charandeep Singh directed the university management to keep the campus closed till further orders to ensure the safety of the students.

The Covid-19 tests of university students were conducted on December 31 last year, the chief medical officer of Reasi said, ANI reported.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir earlier on Saturday recorded 169 new coronavirus cases.

A media bulletin on Kovid-19 issued by the Jammu and Kashmir government said that 68 cases were reported in Jammu, while 101 cases were reported from Kashmir.

Around 107 patients were discharged on Saturday after recovering from Covid-19, while two deaths were reported due to the novel coronavirus.

According to the government, there are a total of 1,397 active cases including 470 in Jammu and 927 in Kashmir.

Earlier on Saturday, at least 12 pilgrims were killed and 16 others injured at Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu as a stampede broke out as crowds gathered on the occasion of New Year.

In the wake of rising cases of COVID-19, the Center had earlier on Saturday asked states and union territories to start construction of field or temporary hospitals to enhance the availability of health infrastructure.

“To address the potential escalation in cases, states are advised to initiate construction of field/temporary hospitals to enhance the availability of health infrastructure to ensure preparedness. This can be done in coordination with DRDO and CSIR as well as private sector, corporations, NGOs etc. This will aid in the process of faster construction of regional hospitals or temporary hospital set-ups,” Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan wrote in his letter to chief secretaries of all states and union territories.

“States may also consider availing hotel rooms and other accommodations attached to COVID dedicated hospitals in the government and private sector to cater to patients with mild to moderate symptoms of Covid-19, as has been the case in some states. Was done during the first bounce. ” she added.
