Covid-19 vaccination for children aged 12-14 from March, says top government expert

New Delhi: NTAGI COVID-19 Working Committee chief Dr NK Arora said on Monday that India may start immunization of children in the age group of 12 to 14 years against COVID-19 in March as by then 15-18 population is fully immunised. was likely.

Of the estimated 74 million population in the 15-18 age group, over 3.45 crore have received their first dose of Covaxin so far. His second dose is scheduled in 28 days, PTI quoted NK Arora as saying.

“Adolescents in this age group are actively participating in the immunization process, and following this pace of vaccination, the remaining beneficiaries in the 15-18 age group are expected to be covered with the first dose by the end of January and thereafter. There is a possibility. His second dose is expected by the end of February,” Dr NK Arora was quoted by PTI in his report.

He said that once the 15-18 age group is vaccinated, the government will take a policy decision to start the 12-14 age group vaccination program in March.

According to him, there are about 75 million people in the age group of 12 to 14 years.

On January 16 last year, a nationwide vaccination campaign began, with health workers (HCWs) being the first to be immunised. Frontline workers (FLWs) were vaccinated from February 2, 2021.

The second phase of COVID-19 vaccination began on March 1 of last year for adults above 60 years of age as well as those aged 45 years and above with certain co-morbid disorders.

From April 1, 2021, everyone over the age of 45 will be vaccinated.

Therefore, the government has decided to widen its vaccination drive, allowing anyone over the age of 18 to be vaccinated from May 1.

The next round of COVID-19 vaccination for adolescents aged 15 to 18 began on January 3 this year.
