PATNA: The state government has asked all medical colleges and government hospitals in the state to improve treatment facilities for children in view of a possible third wave. covid Universal pandemic.
Health Minister Mangal Pandey said hospitals have been asked to increase the number of beds in children’s wards, equip them with oxygen pipelines and keep important medical equipment ready for the treatment of children.
He said that the health department is providing all necessary equipment to the hospitals besides holding regular meetings with the superintendents and principals of health institutions.
“Private hospitals and NGOs are also being encouraged to plan in advance to protect children from the deadly virus,” the minister told this newspaper. He lauded the Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital in Patna for setting up a separate ward for children with 90 beds.
Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) has almost completed its preparation for the future. IGIMS superintendent Dr Manish Mandal said, “We have fully reserved one floor for the treatment of children in the event of the third wave of Kovid.
Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is also busy in improving its childcare facilities. The hospital has started preparing 60 new pediatric beds. The virus mutates for its existence and after witnessing human suffering in the first and second wave, there is a strong possibility of its third wave,” said PMCH superintendent Dr IS Thakur said.
The work of connecting the 80 beds with oxygen pipeline is likely to start soon, Dr Thakur said, adding that the hospital will arrange other facilities from its own resources in case of emergency.
The number of pediatric beds in Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) has been increased from 84 to 124. “Additional equipment like infusion pumps, monitors and ventilators have been provided by the health department,” NMCH Superintendent Dr Binod Kumar Singh said. Though piped oxygen is available in all the beds, 99 oxygen concentrators are also kept ready at NMCH.
Dr SN Sinha, Director, Mahaveer Vatsalya Hospital, said that one floor of the hospital was dedicated to a 90-bed children’s ward. He said, “Keeping in mind the possible third wave of Kovid, the ward has been made.”
