COVID-19: 26 new cases and zero deaths in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: A day after reporting a surge in new COVID-19 cases, Tamil Nadu on Thursday reported 26 infections and pushed the total caseload since the time of the virus outbreak to 34,53,011. The health department said there were no deaths, so the toll remained unchanged with 38,025.

On Wednesday, the state reported 30 new cases.

A bulletin said that with 37 people being discharged in the last 24 hours, leaving 34,14,739 active infections, new cases were recovered.

Among the districts, Chennai saw 12 new cases, while Chengalpet, Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Karur, Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruvallur reported below 10 cases.

The state capital – Chennai – recorded a total of 7,51,167 cases, while 12 districts reported zero active infections.

A total of 21,635 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative number of samples tested to 6,57,57,245.

The bulletin said 14 men and 12 women were among those who tested positive for the infection.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam said that 26 cases have been reported in the state, while the state encourages everyone to take two doses of the vaccine, but it is not mandatory to show the vaccination certificate to enter public places.

The minister also said that no one will be fined for not wearing a mask or maintaining social distance while he encourages people to wear masks and maintain social distancing in public places.
