The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by the current Chief Justice NV Ramana, has recommended the names of nine judges, including Justice Nagarathna, for promotion. Justice Nagarathna is currently a judge of the Karnataka High Court.

Justice Nagarathna spoke of the media regulation system
Justice Nagarathna was appointed an additional judge in the Karnataka High Court in 2008, and was appointed a permanent judge in 2010. He has given many important decisions on the basis of commercial and constitutional laws. In addition, in 2012, in view of the increasing cases of fake news, Justice Nagarathna and other judges had directed the central government to examine the possibility of regulating media broadcasting. However, he also warned of the dangers of government control over the media.
