“Some people had tried to link the bitterness with a series of riots in the sugarcane region (western parts) of Uttar Pradesh. Now the country has to decide whether the sweetness of sugarcane will increase or Jinnah’s followers will do mischief,” Adityanath said while addressing a crowd of thousands.

SP leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav last month compared Jinnah to Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru, saying all of them helped India achieve independence.

His remarks had invited strong criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), among others.

Adityanath said that Uttar Pradesh is scaling new heights under Modi’s leadership, be it public welfare schemes that reach everyone without any discrimination or creating new infrastructure for development or respecting people’s trust.
