Council of Europe: Russia begins ‘exit process’ from Council of Europe – Times of India

Moscow: RussiaThe Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that it is initiating the process of getting out of Council of Europeas the pressure increased MoscowExpulsion from the pan-European rights group.
The ministry posted a statement on its Telegram account on “starting the process of exiting the Council of Europe”, adding that it had informed Secretary General Marija Pejinovi Buric of her departure.
Ukraine on Monday demanded that Russia be immediately expelled from the Council of Europe, saying it has no right to remain a member after sending troops to the pro-Western country.
On February 24, a day after thousands of troops entered Ukraine, Russia was suspended from all rights to represent it.
The foreign ministry in its statement cited the “discriminatory” move, saying that “under such circumstances, our country will no longer be in the Council of Europe.”
Pejसinovi Buric told AFP earlier this month that “more and more voices are demanding that the next step is the expulsion of the Russian Federation”.
Russia joined the Council of Europe in 1996.
“We withdraw from such a Council of Europe without regret,” the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
The ministry said its exit “will not affect the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens” and that “the implementation of the already adopted resolutions of the European Court of Human Rights will continue, if they do not contradict Russia’s constitution”.
