Since the people of Kerala form a significant part of Coimbatore’s population, the district administration had declared a local holiday on Saturday, when the 10-day long festival culminated with the Thiruvonam celebrations.
The Siddhapudur Sri Ayyappan temple, adorned with colorful floral rangolis, witnessed huge crowds since morning. However, the temple was closed for devotees due to restrictions. People had darshan of God from outside the temple.
Arvind Kutty, 40, said, “It would have been a great experience if we were allowed inside the temple as it is one of the important aspects of Onam celebrations.” “While restrictions are necessary to prevent further spread of Covid, people kept flocking to the temple to see if it would open for a particular darshan,” he said.
Malayali people made rangoli of flowers in front of their homes on Saturday morning. As food is an integral part of the festivities, hotels in the city offer a tempting combination of Onam Sadhya and even take advance bookings.
While Onam was celebrated in a grand manner in educational institutions, this year colleges and school teachers celebrated the festival in the last one week, which was largely subdued. Students attending online classes from home missed the opportunity of Rangoli competition and wearing traditional attire.
