New Delhi: Union Minister Jitendra Singh On Saturday, there has been a progressive decline in Covid-19 cases in all the eight northeastern states, but cautioned that the decline in active cases should be followed with greater emphasis on vaccination and strict adherence to relevant protocols.
In a review meeting with the health secretaries of all the eight northeastern states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim Singh expressed satisfaction that they are catching up with the national average in terms of declining positivity rate.
He said Meghalaya is the only exception, which saw a rise due to Covid-19 cases in a jail in Ri-Bhoi district.
The minister said there has been a progressive decline in the number of COVID-19 cases in all the eight north-eastern states.
Union Development Minister of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Singh informed that in the North Eastern Region, the positivity rate, which was 3.96 per cent on June 30, has come down to 2.94 per cent on July 2. The national average came down from 2.34 per cent on June 30 to 2.09 per cent on July 2, an official statement said.
All the eight states informed the minister that they are taking regular measures to defeat the second wave of the pandemic, and at the same time, augmenting the health infrastructure with the support of the central government and the donor ministry.
The Minister cautioned that the decline in active cases should be followed with more emphasis on vaccination and strict adherence to the COVID-19 protocol.
Singh said that he is in constant touch with all the eight chief ministers of the region and whatever help is being sought by the states, it is being provided immediately. Center.
The Minister took note of the vaccine supply issues of Nagaland and Manipur and directed the officials of the Union Health Ministry to address the same on an urgent basis.
Singh said that in the last wave of the pandemic, the Northeast had been relatively unaffected by the coronavirus as compared to other states.
He said that some states like Sikkim did not have a single Covid-positive case during the lockdown period in the first wave.
But on the contrary, this year, the North-Eastern states have seen a significant increase in COVID-19 cases.
In the month of May, during the peak of coronavirus cases in the region, Singh held a high-level meeting in the wake of considerable media attention.
He had directed the officials to find ways to ensure that the rising graph of coronavirus positive cases in various northeastern states starts decreasing or flattening out. The minister had advised that strict measures be implemented in addition to extensive testing and contact-tracing.
Singh said that he is taking daily updates from all the eight states about the prevalence of COVID-19 and the health facilities and infrastructure required to effectively fight the pandemic.
