Connecticut parish mourns loss of Sister Church in Haiti

Bridgeport, Conn.: At least 1,300 people died in an earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday, which has had an unexpected emotional impact on the Connecticut parish and its Rev.

Bolliere is pastor of the Shakina Free Methodist Worship Center in Bridgeport. As the New Haven Register reports, he also oversees a sister parish of the same name in Corelle, Haiti, which was destroyed by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake over the weekend.

Bolliere said a member of the parish had died and the church caretaker was in critical condition after his house next to the church collapsed.

The church has been completely destroyed, Bollier said. “We will be in rebuilding mode after assessing the situation.

The newspaper said Korel is in a remote, mountainous area in the country’s southern peninsula, making it difficult to contact the church even in the best of times.

Bridgeport Parish will hold a meeting on Sunday, collecting some money and sending some survival kits, Bollier said.

It’s going to be an effort but we’re determined that we’re going to help them as much as we can,” he said. “It’s going to be very difficult. We will need logistics support to get it from Haiti.
