Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Kanhaiya Kumar will join Congress today. There is also talk of Gujarat’s Dalit activist and MLA Jignesh Mevani joining the Congress with him. In the program to be held in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi will get them the membership of Congress and during this time Patidar leader Hardik Patel will also be present. It is believed that the Congress, troubled by the rebels in many states, is now playing bets on the youth.

The speculation of Kanhaiya joining the Congress was going on for a long time. Last week, CPI general secretary D. Raja had asked him to debunk the rumours, holding a press conference. Central leaders were waiting for him at the party office in Delhi, but Kanhaiya did not reach and did not even answer messages and phone calls from party leaders. Kanhaiya and Jignesh also met Rahul Gandhi in the past.

Kanhaiya came into the discussion with anti-national slogans
Kanhaiya Kumar first came into the limelight in 2016 with the alleged anti-national sloganeering in JNU. A video of him had surfaced, in which he was raising slogans of azadi-azadi. Kanhaiya Kumar was the student union president of JNU at the time of this controversy. Then in 2019, before the Lok Sabha elections, he joined the CPI. He contested the Lok Sabha elections from Begusarai, but lost to Giriraj Singh of BJP.

Kanhaiya’s arrival can benefit Congress in Bihar
Talk about regional parties like JDU and RJD in Bihar or national parties like BJP-Congress, the leaders of the second line are coming forward in all the parties. Tejashwi has already taken over the command in RJD. The Lok Janshakti Party is headed by Chirag Paswan. JD(U)’s Nitish has already said that he will not contest the next election. BJP has also kept the signs clear by removing Sushil Kumar Modi from the main responsibility. In such a situation, Congress does not have any young leader who can become a long distance horse. Therefore, he sees potential in Kanhaiya, who can strengthen the party at the state level in the long run.

Congress did not field a candidate against Jignesh in 2017
Jignesh Mevani has emerged as the young face of Dalit politics by gathering people in many movements in Gujarat. He is an independent MLA from Vadgam, Gujarat. The Congress is believed to have played a role in Jignesh’s victory in the 2017 assembly elections, as the Congress had not fielded any candidate against him. Now the Congress will try to gain a lead in next year’s assembly elections in Gujarat through Jignesh and Patidar leader Hardik Patel.
