Congress workers in Noida staged a protest over inflation, unemployment

Congress workers on Tuesday staged a protest here against the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, targeting it over issues like price rise, unemployment and farmers’ protests.

The protest was organized as part of party events organized across the country to mark the anniversary of the ‘August Revolution’ call by Mahatma Gandhi to ‘Quit India’ in 1942.

Congress leader Anil Yadav said, “In Uttar Pradesh, on August 9 and 10, a foot march has been taken out in all the assembly constituencies, demanding that the BJP quit power.”

He claimed that the Yogi Adityanath government has failed miserably in curbing inflation and crime, providing employment and resolving farmers’ problems.

A day after similar events in the city’s Sectors 18 and 19, 200-300 participants, including party functionaries, members and supporters, took out processions in Noida’s Sector 70, 121 and 122 in protest against Tuesday.

The Congress alleged that it and other opposition parties were not allowed to hold protests while the BJP gets a chance to organize public events in Noida.

“The administration did not allow us to take out this march, but we have gone ahead with it and are ready to face any repercussions,” Yadav said.

However, the Noida unit of the BJP termed the allegation as “irrational and baseless”.

“On Monday, protests were held by the Congress, the youth wing of the Samajwadi Party and a workers’ union in Noida and Greater Noida. Hundreds of farmers have been protesting in nearby Ghazipur since last year. Hence, the allegation is illogical and baseless. BJP spokesperson Tanmay Shankar told PTI.

According to police officials, Section 144 of CrPC, which prohibits public assembly of four or more persons, has been imposed in Gautam Buddh Nagar, including Noida and Greater Noida, in view of the pandemic.
