The Congress on Saturday announced a three-phase “Mehanga-Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” campaign against price hikes, under which it will hold rallies and marches across the country from March 31 to April 7. Congress General Secretary and Chief Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in a press conference here that in the first phase of the campaign, Congress workers and common people will stage dharna outside their homes and in public places on March 31.

He said people would garland LPG cylinders, play drums and bells to highlight the issue of inflation and try to draw the attention of the “deaf BJP government” against the insurmountable rise in the prices of LPG, petrol and diesel. Surjewala said, “The Congress President, in consultation with party general secretaries and state in-charges, has decided to advocate for the interests of the people in the three-phase program – Mehndi-Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.”

He said that from April 2 to April 4, Congress along with NGOs, religious, social organizations and resident welfare bodies would organize district level dharnas and marches across the country. Surjewala said that on April 7, the party would organize “Mehngai Mukt Bharat” dharnas and marches at all state headquarters with the help of social and religious organisations, NGOs and people.

Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal presided over the meeting at the party headquarters here. Prominent party leaders who attended the meeting included Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Oommen Chandy, Mukul Wasnik, Tariq Anwar, Surjewala, Ajay Maken and treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal.

The meeting is taking place in the wake of the party’s humiliating defeat in the recent assembly elections in five states.
