There is turmoil in the Goa Congress. Meanwhile, Congress leader Mukul Wasnik took a meeting of the legislature party. 10 out of 11 MLAs reached the meeting. Angry legislators were also among them. Digambar Kamat is the only MLA who did not attend the meeting. However, Kamat has spoken of being with the party.
On Sunday, the Congress had said that five out of their 11 MLAs could not be contacted. Congress had accused two of its MLAs Michael Lobo and former CM Digambar Kamat of colluding with the BJP to create a split among the party’s legislators.
The Congress had also claimed that the BJP conspired that the party should be weakened and defected in Goa. Along with this, BJP was also accused of buying MLAs for Rs 40-40 crore.
Angry MLAs reached Monday’s meeting
Rajesh Faldesai, Delaila Lobo and Kedar Naik reached the Congress office for the meeting first among the angry MLAs. After this Michael Lobo also reached. On the previous day, Congress had removed Lobo from the post of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, accusing him of colluding with the BJP. Apart from Mukul Wasnik, Dinesh Gundu Rao was also present in the meeting.
Only 3 MLAs reached Sunday’s meeting
Congress has 11 MLAs in Goa. Amidst speculations of rebellion, the party had called an emergency meeting of all the MLAs at around 7 pm on Sunday. It was attended by Girish Chodankar, Dinesh Rao, and Amit Patkar. Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Alexio Sequeira, Kedar Naik, Rajesh Faldesai, Carlos Alvares, Elton Dacosta, Yuri Alemo did not attend the meeting.
Angry MLA said, everything is fine in the party
The angry MLAs who reached the meeting of the party said that everything is fine in the party and everyone is united. Michael Lobo has also said that there will be no problem in the party. Along with this, he said that not attending any press conference cannot be a ground for disqualification.
Lobo’s wife Delayla is also a Congress MLA. Lobo says that my wife has won the election on Congress ticket and she is also with the party. However, a day earlier, Michael Lobo was seen leaving the residence of CM Pramod Sawant with his MLA wife.
Michael Lobo said that I and my MLA wife are with the Congress.
Application filed for disqualification of 2 MLAs
Congress has filed an application for the disqualification of two MLAs Digambar Kamat and Michael Lobo. State Congress Committee President Amit Patkar claimed that he had voluntarily left the membership of the party. There is a decision of the Supreme Court, which states that any anti-party activity is tantamount to giving up the membership of the party.
Patkar had also claimed that the BJP wants to repeat what it has done in Maharashtra through money and muscle power.
Digambar Kamat said that I am with Congress, but I am saddened by the allegations made by Dinesh Gundu.
Sonia had sent Wasnik to Panaji
The Congress high command became active late on Sunday night to prevent the MLAs from rebelling in Goa. Sonia Gandhi had directed Mukul Wasnik to go to Panaji for talks with the MLAs. Wasnik reached Panaji in the night itself and started talking to the MLAs.
CM’s counterattack on the allegations of Congress
Former Goa Congress President Girish Chodankar had claimed that MLAs have been offered Rs 40 crore to join the BJP. The call is being made. CM Pramod Sawant has termed these allegations as baseless. BJP is away from 1 seat for majority
There are 40 seats in the Goa Legislative Assembly. Congress has 11 and BJP has 20 MLAs. Apart from this, Maharashtra Gomantak Party has 2 MLAs, 3 Independents. According to information received from sources, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is going to Goa. No party got majority in the state in the 2022 Goa assembly elections. BJP got 20 seats out of the total 40 in the state, while the majority figure is 21. In this way BJP was just one step away from full majority in Goa. However, BJP leaders formed the government in the state with the help of independents.
