Congress Proposes Legislation Against Hate Crimes at Plenary Session in Chhattisgarh

Congress leaders are brainstorming the party’s strategy to prepare for the state assembly polls due this year and the 2024 general election during the plenary session.

Congress, if voted to power, will bring a law against hate crimes in the country.

The claim is part of the party’s 58-point political resolution that was adopted at its 85th plenary session on Saturday.

In its political resolution, the Congress also said, “The judiciary is constantly under threat from direct and indirect measures that instil apprehension in their minds.” And the integrity of the judiciary shall be maintained and protected at all costs,” the party said in its resolution.

It added that the party would pass a “new law to prevent and punish hate crimes”.

“Congress promises to pass an anti-discrimination law prohibiting discrimination on grounds of religion, race, sex or language in the supply of goods and services to the general public, such as housing, hostels, hotels, clubs, etc., Sankalp said.

In the last eight and a half years of the BJP government, the party said, “the politics of hatred has assumed dangerous proportions and religious polarization has reached its peak”.

“Hate crimes and atrocities have increased manifold. Vigilant right-wing groups instigate violence on various trivial issues. These groups act brazenly and have started acting like police, spreading chaos and fear. This fear in the minds of minorities is BJP/ RSS is the aim of governance,” the party said in its resolution.

“During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, it was clear that most Indians yearn for love, peace and harmony,” it said.

“Crimes against the weaker sections of the society have also increased. According to the NCRB, there is a 1.2 per cent increase in atrocities against Scheduled Castes (SCs) in 2021. Violence against Dalit and Adivasi women has also increased. Rape cases against SC women, including minors, account for 7.64 per cent of the total reported cases and cases against ST women account for 15 per cent.
