Chinese value harmony in society as much as Americans value individual freedom, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Said at Cambridge University. These comments now come under attack from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over Rahul Gandhi being ‘soft’ on China when India is engaged in a standoff with China at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since 2020.

In his presentation that described China as ‘an aspiring global superpower’ and ‘China: a force of nature’, Gandhi reflected on the issue.

In the past, the BJP has criticized Gandhi for his meetings with Chinese officials and the government recently revoked the FCRA license of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation for receiving funds from the Chinese embassy.

“The way Americans value individual liberty, the Chinese value harmony. Individual liberty is not at the center of China’s thought, their thought is more about society being in harmony because they have massive clout , they have an enormous amount of pain, a cultural revolution, civil war… What they don’t want are things going out of control, spiraling out of control and chaos is coming… which is legitimate,” Gandhi said at the University of Cambridge. is as valid to them as individual liberty is to America.

These comments attracted criticism from the BJP, with BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya saying, “Rahul Gandhi, in brazen manner, justifies China’s authoritarianism, says Chinese value social harmony.”

The BJP also released a video saying ‘Congress-China Bhai Bhai’. Gandhi has said that China dominates production today and had also spoken to senior Chinese leaders.

“I have read a lot about China, I have talked to senior leaders and people who think about China. I have a good sense,” Gandhi said.

Gandhi said a conversation with a senior Communist Party figure shaped his understanding of China. “He explained to me that the Yellow River comes down from the Himalayas and has unlimited power and energy. He said that if the Chinese civilization manages it effectively, which it does mostly on the coast, it can use the power of the Yellow River. And then China rises. Sometimes it happens that the Yellow River comes with its full energy but China is unable to use it effectively and then there is chaos and havoc.

China looks at energies and flows and processes and tries to shape them, Gandhi added, adding that some of their works emanate from this.
