CONCOR introduces volume-based discount on rail fares to replenish empty boxes

State-owned Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR) has introduced volume-based rebate on rail freight for the position of empty containers to ensure availability of containers for export.

Concor said the existing plan to transport empty containers from various gateway ports to internal terminals with 50 per cent discount on rail freight will continue till March 31 next year.

The scheme has now been extended to reposition empty containers for export purposes from various portside Concor Container Freight Stations (CFSs) to other Inland Container Depots (ICDs), the company said in a trade notice.

Under the scheme, shipping lines offering twenty foot equivalent units (TEU) of empty containers in excess of 15,000 per month will be given a 100% discount on rail fares.

Lines offering empty containers more than 10,000 TEU and up to 15,000 TEU per month will be given a 75% discount on rail fares.

CONCOR said the objective of the scheme is to ensure adequate availability of empty containers for trade to meet their export commitments, boost exports and reduce logistics cost.

The notice said that the new scheme has come into effect from September 1 and will be valid till March 31 next year.

Exporters from India have been affected by a severe shortage of empty containers for exports in the wake of disruptions in the global supply chain.
