CONCACAF Champions League: Pumas Stun New England Revolution to Reach Semis

Mexican side Pumas UNAM knocked the New England Revolution out of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday, reversing a 3-0 first leg deficit before winning on penalties to book their place in the semi-finals of the regional club tournament.

New England, bidding to join fellow Major League Soccer side New York City in the Final Four, were shocked by a massive puma at Mexico City’s Estadio Olímpico.

A goal in each half from Pumas striker Juan Dineno raised hopes of an impossible comeback, before Sebastian Saucedo struck the roof of the net at the 59-minute mark to make the night 3-0, 3-3 on aggregate.

With New England’s Omar Gonzalez seeing a header saved at point blank in stoppage time by Pumas goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera, both teams had a chance to snatch victory in a frenzied closing passage of the game.

With no extra time, the game went straight to penalties.

New England’s Sebastian Lelet handed the initiative to the Pumas after leaving his team’s fourth penalty on the bar in a 2-2 shoot-out.

Nicolas Freire then scored to put the Pumas 3–2 ahead, and although American international Jozy Altidore equalized with his team’s fifth kick, Dineno stepped up to fire the Mexican side in the semi-finals, shoot. -out won 4-3.

This defeat capped a disappointing night for MLS sides in the tournament, the premier club competition for teams from Central America, North America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF).

Previously, Montreal was held to a 1–1 draw at home to Liga-MX side Cruz Azul, going 2–1 on aggregate to the semi-finals.

No team in Major League Soccer has won the CONCACAF title since the Los Angeles Galaxy won the crown in 2000.
