Last month, the Center announced that as part of its new immunization policy, government experts will examine different combinations of COVID-19 vaccine doses to see if they can improve efficacy.
Dr. Guleria also disregarded the concern that vaccination against the Delta Plus strain would be ineffective. The AIIMS director said additional data was needed to determine whether the mutated strain was capable of rendering vaccination ineffective.
A mutation of the delta plus delta variation, or B.1.617.2 strain, was initially discovered in India and is believed to be responsible for the devastating second wave that hit the country in April–May. Many experts have speculated that the Delta Plus variant could trigger a third wave in the near future, while top doctors have said that a potential third wave would be unlikely to be as devastating as the second.
Dr. Guleria also said that if someone has received both doses of the vaccine, but is still exposed to the virus, he may get the disease, but it will only be “mild”.
