Collegium in India may get its first woman CJI as three women judges in 9th list of 2027 – India Times Hindi News – World Latest News Headlines

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana on Tuesday recommended nine names to the central government for appointment as judges of the apex court. The names include three women judges of the Karnataka High Court along with BV Nagarathna who, if promoted, could become the country’s first CJI in 2027.

The names of two other women judges are Justice Hima Kohli, Chief Justice of Telangana High Court and Justice Bela Trivedi of Gujarat High Court. Indian Express told.

Reportedly, senior advocate PS Narasimha is said to be the first choice of the collegium for direct promotion to the Supreme Court. His recommendation comes less than a week after the retirement of Justice Rohinton F Nariman – the only fifth lawyer in India’s legal history to be appointed directly to the Bar.

The list also includes- Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Abhay Oka, Justice Vikram Nath and Justice JK Maheshwari as well as Chief Justices of Gujarat and Sikkim High Courts.

Known for his decisions on civil liberties, Justice Oka is the senior-most High Court judge in the country. He made headlines during the Covid-19 pandemic when he passed several orders aimed at the welfare of migrant workers. In most of these cases, Justice Oka was part of the bench along with Justice Nagarathna, who questioned the government’s handling of the crisis situation.

Similarly, Justice Nath also made headlines after questioning the government’s handling of the pandemic- he raised questions on a range of issues including lack of hospital beds and availability of essential medicines, especially during the second Covid-19 wave. He was also the first to bring the first live telecast of the courtroom, streaming the hearing on the Covid crisis on YouTube.

Other names up for promotion in the list include Justice CT Ravikumar, the second senior judge of the Kerala High Court and Justice MM Sundaresh, the third senior judge of the Madras High Court.
