COIMBATORE: A woman, 36, who snatched a 7.2-sovereign gold chain from a woman shop owner on 7th Street Extension at Rathinapuri on Friday after spraying her with insecticide was nabbed after the owner offered resistance and raised an alarm.
Police identified the accused as S Thavamani alias Deivanathi. According to an investigation officer, Thavamani visited the shop on Friday evening on the pretext of buying some gift items.
“She selected a gift and asked the shopowner, 57-year-old C Selvarani, to wrap the same. When she was wrapping manithe gift, Thavamanivamani sprayed the insecticide in her face and snatched her gold chain.”
Selvarani tried to catch the woman, but she managed to escape. “She raised an alarm and neighbors chased Thavamani and caught her. They later handed her over to us,” the officer said.
Police recovered the chain from Thavamani who was produced before a court which sent her to jail.
Meanwhile, the CCTV camera footage of the incident has gone viral on social media on Saturday. Police said Thavamani was involved in a few crimes in the district and other parts of the state.
