CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu health minister Ma Subramanian has ordered suspension of a cardiologist heading the department in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for absenting himself from work and creating false records of attendance.
The minister, who visited Coimbatore over the weekend, received complaints that the cardiologist, a resident of Salem, was skipping work.
There was a detailed investigation. Health secretary P Senthil Kumar had verified the attendance register to check the complaints, the minister said in Chennai on Monday.
“We found that the staff marked CL if he does not come to work. He changes it to ‘mu’ in Tamil when he returns to work. His name is Munusamy and he signs as ‘Mu’, he said. The health department will also hold a departmental inquiry against him, he added.
He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating new facilities at Madras Medical College. The minister inaugurated a boarding facility for external examiners, office for the Visaka committee, duty rooms with boarding and lodging facility for doctors, a fish tank and a special ward.
He also inaugurated a regional training centre for doctors to enhance their teaching skills as part of the central programme. “Until now, doctors from TN had to go to the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Studies or JIPMER for this training. Now, we have two government hospitals in TN — Madras Medical College and Madurai Medical College — for this training,” he said.
