Coimbatore: House owners From Uppilaypalayam, whose land the state government has proposed to take for the expansion of the Coimbatore airport, staged a against The collector’s office on Wednesday urged the district administration to find suitable land for them as the compensation amount fixed for them would not be enough to cover the land and building construction.
The protesters said that the parcel of land proposed for acquisition had 110 houses. Considering the number of vacant land owners who have come forward to give their land, the number is very less.
Out of 110 homeowners, 20 people have already received the money.
The landlords said that though their demand for alternate land for them was agreed upon by the district administration in a consultation meeting in 2017, it is not being considered now. The state government had already approved the money to be disbursed for the landlords, saying they would have no place to go.
Explaining the difficulties, a landlord, S Chandran, said that a person living in a house built on four cents land would get a compensation of around Rs 30 to 35 lakh. Considering the cost of land within a 10 km radius, the money would be enough to buy just four cents of the land. They will have no money left to build a house.
“The compensation made by the authorities includes only the present cost of our land. We will not get anything for the building. If we have to build a house, we will have to invest Rs 2,000 per sq ft, which means 20 lakhs It will be Rs. required for a 1000 sq ft house,” said Chandran.
Another protester said that the then collector had assured land in Arasur village in 2017. He urged the district administration not to go back on its promise. He said that if they get the land, they can use this money to build houses without any hassle.
Chandran said he has made his position clear to District Collector SG Samiran.
